Players and staff went without pay, and bailiffs would be frequent visitors to the club shop. They were 10 points adrift of safety and last in the EFL’s bottom division by the time Howe took over, and in dire financial straits. The club had begun 2008-09 in administration and were subsequently handed a 17-point deduction. When a 31-year-old Eddie Howe was handed the Bournemouth manager’s job for the first time, in January 2009, it presented a near-impossible task.
